"Can't Bring This Down" is the second single from Bridgit Mendler's second studio album. It features rapper Pell.

Bridgit and Pell performed the song at Nemesis Tour but at that time, the name was not revealed.

Background

Bridgit confirmed that the song was written in the spring of 2016 in California, and was completed in Fall of the same year.

On November 15, 2016, in The Echoplex, Los Angeles, USA, Bridgit sang the song with Pell but did not reveal the title.[1] On March 16, 2017, Bridgit uploaded the song to Spotify but could not be heard as it would be released the day after. That same day, Bridgit and Pell sang "Can't Bring This Down" live on SXSW.

Finally, on March 17th, Bridgit released the audio of "Can't Bring This Down" into her personal youtube account[2] and Spotify. That same day, Bridgit uploaded a photo in the profile of their social networks with an outfit that could use it for the video of "Can't Bring This Down"

Cover art

On March 22, Bridgit chatted on twitter about song questions and Bridgit revealed that on the cover of the song, the names were her handwriting and that the photo is her holding a glass of water.[3]

Live performances

On March 16, 2017, Bridgit and Pell sang the song on SXSW live to promote the song a day before the release.[4]

Critical reception

"Can't Bring This Down" received positive reviews. Tomas Bleach said: "After taking a long hiatus Bridgit Mendler has not been wasting any time and has been constantly delivering new material. After the massive success of her EP [Nemesis] last year she’s been giving us follow up singles every couple of weeks to hold us over until the next major release. “Can’t Bring This Down” is a collaboration with rapper Pell and is probably her strongest track since the EP. The organic rhythmic sound that she’s adapted really showcases her vocals brilliantly and oozes this confidence that her Disney debut album was lacking. It’s a catchy track that grows on you with each listen and has a sure fire hook that will have you grooving. However Im unsure why she’s releasing all these tracks with rappers as she should be stepping forward and showing off this new found confidence more."[5] On SoundFiction said: "Following a successful SXSW this past week, independent recording artist Bridgit Mendler has released a new single “Can’t Bring This Down,” a collaboration with up and coming New Orleans MC Pell.  Posting close to 240,000 plays on Spotify to date with over 1.5 million monthly listeners since it was released just last Friday, March 17, the smooth R&B track was Bridgit’s highest daily listen so far, besting her previous singles “Temperamental Love” (a collaboration with Toronto-based artist Devontée) and “Do You Miss Me At All.” If you haven’t heard it yet for yourself, check it out below."[6]

Music video

On March 23, 2017, Bridgit said the music video for "Can't Bring This Down" would be green screened and very surreal.[7] On May 10, Bridgit announced that the music video would be released that week.[8]

Finally, it was released on May 12, 2016. The video features Mendler and Pell lying on a green screen with special effects and was directed again by Vlad Sepetov, who directed the music video for "Temperamental Love".

Lyrics

[Pre-Chorus: Bridgit Mendler & Pell]
Shake my head like this
You better stop it
Too high, too quick
You are the one
I never felt like this
If I'm being honest

[Chorus: Bridgit Mendler & Pell]
I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(I can't bring this down)

[Verse 1: Pell]
Shake my head like this you better watch it
Betting on your loving, making profits
I'm not a prophet I'm just honest
Clean up nice, fly as comets
We take off like my conscience
So I don't wanna bring this down, down
Don't get scared when my friends all around
I need your TLC
Chasing down your waterfall
While you got both eyes left on me
I don't mind if I O.D. 'cause you're the only drug I need
And if I get too high it's probably where I need to be, please

[Pre-Chorus: Bridgit Mendler & Pell]
Shake my head like this (like this)
You better stop it
Too high, too quick (too quick)
You are the one
I never felt like this
If I'm being honest (yep)

[Chorus: Bridgit Mendler & Pell]
I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(I can't bring this down)

[Verse 2: Bridgit Mendler]
Shake my head like this
You make me spin around
Take a trip back to my hometown
Show you what's going down, down
Boy you got dimensions
Not a simple one I know
Saw you in my mentions
Shot my heart and caught my soul
Floating off to somewhere
Wave goodbye to folks at home
Heaven is a place that only we know

[Bridge: Pell]
Your body is heaven on Earth
Your convo is mama's dessert
Sweet and deserved
And we know relations take work
So roll up them sleeves and come here
(Whop, skrr)

[Pre-Chorus: Bridgit Mendler & Pell]
Shake my head like this (like this)
You better stop it
Too high, too quick (too quick)
You are the one
I never felt like this
If I'm being honest

[Chorus: Bridgit Mendler & Pell]
I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(I can't bring this down)

I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I can't bring this down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

[Outro: Bridgit Mendler & Pell]
I can't bring this down
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
